Marshall goal snuffs out hopes of point

Have your say

Sheffield Wednesday 3, Chesterfield 1

Chesterfield FC’s performance at Hillsborough deserved a point but John Sheridan’s men slipped to their third straight defeat.

The Spireites made a bright start but it was the Owls who netted the crucial first goal after 17 minutes when full-back Lewis Buxton headed home a corner.

Wednesday frontman Gary Madine made it 2-0 with a powerful shot from the edge of the area in the 59th minute but Leon Clarke gave Chesterfield hope when he prodded home a Mark Randall corner with ten minutes remaining.

And the visitors pressurised the home side and looked likely to force an equaliser until Dean Morgan lost possession in midfield in the 87th minute.

The ball was swept out to Ben Marshall on the left and he cut inside and beat Greg Fleming with a right-foot shot just inside the 18-yard box.

The verdict extended Wednesday’s perfect start at Hillsborough of six wins from six starts while the result left Chesterfield hovering above the relegation zone.
