Chesterfield 2, Port Vale 0
Second-half goals from Jack Lester and Deane Smalley nudged runaway leaders Chesterfield a step closer to the League Two title.
The Spireites bossed promotion-rivals Port Vale from the outset but it took until the 48th minute for them to break the deadlock.
And the scoring was opened by veteran striker Jack Lester who climbed high at the far post to head in a pin-point cross from Dean Morgan from close range. It was Lester’s 15th goal of the campaign.
Smalley settled the result in the 71st minute with a brilliant finish.
A fine through ball from Drew Talbot left Smalley with just Vale keeper Stuart Tomlinson to beat. Smalley took the ball wide and passed it into the net from a narrow angle for his 11th goal of the season.
The result and the display pleased manager John Sheridan who said: “I am a very happy man. It was a performance from a top of the table side.’’
