Humphreys confident future can be bright for Chesterfield

Chesterfield signed off their miserable League One season with a narrow 3-2 defeat at Sheffield United which left them rock bottom.

But Humphreys says it should not be all doom and gloom at the Proact as they look to bounce back at the first attempt.

“From our point of view I think we gave a good account of ourselves,” he said.

“We tried to stop them doing what they do best and in the balance of the game we did well.

“Unfortunately, we’ve lost the game and had a tough season.

“Hopefully next season we’ll be doing like this as well.

“They’re signs there with the players coming through, and we’ve got a good manager in Gary. We have to try and build and come back stronger.

“It’s a big summer for the club. The manager will sit down with the players in the coming days and start a rebuilding process.

“We saw Doncaster Rovers do something similar to us last year, and they rebuilt and got straight back up. That has to be our aim now.”

The former Sheffield Wednesday player was also full of praise for the record-breaking Blades,

“This is their moment,” he added.

“We gave them the guard of honour before the match, and anyone who wins the league you acknowledge them.

“They’re the champions for a reason. They’re a good team with good players.

“I know some of their players and I know some of the staff too.

“I’ve known Chris Wilder since I was probably 10 years olds when I was coming here as a fan.

“One of his shirts is still actually in my mum’s wardrobe in her house.

“I’m delighted for Chris, and the club.”
