Chesterfield’s hopes of bringing in Sam Clucas from rivals Mansfield Town appear to have disintegrated after Stags boss Paul Cox confirmed the player will not be joining the Spireites.
Last season’s League Two winners, Chesterfield, were keen on bringing the 23-year-old to the Proact Stadium to bolster their attacking arsenal but couldn’t meet Mansfield’s asking price.
The Spireites had been in talks with the League Two club for weeks, to the point the former Lincoln City and Hereford man was left out of the Stags’ starting line up due to the possibility of a move.
Cox said this morning (Thursday): “Sam will be staying here. They couldn’t meet our valuation so we now draw a line under it and move on.”
Spireites boss Paul Cook, who is preparing his side for the trip to Port Vale on Saturday in League One, said last week Clucas was one of ‘a hundred players’ he had enquired about.
