Dean Saunders admits he is in the dark over the futures of Sam Clucas and Tendayi Darikwa at Chesterfield.

Both men have been subject of strong interest this summer but were back in pre-season training with the Spireites on Wednesday.

Saunders has made it clear to chairman Dave Allen and chief executive Chris Turner that he does not want to see any other players leave the club after the departures of Gary Roberts and Jimmy Ryan.

But he has assured supporters he has contingency plans should there be any further depatures.

“I’m still a bit in the dark about some of the players that we have offers on the table for, the vultures are hovering around,” Saunders said.

“I’ve told Chris Turner and the chairman that I don’t want to lose any more players, but I’ve plans in place if I do.”

Saunders was delighted to begin work with his Spireites squad for the first time following their return to pre-season training.

But he confessed he has been forced to take the first few days slowly due to the heat.

He said: “We’re easing the back players into it, we’ve got over five weeks training and the most important thing is not to pick up any injuries;

“If you blow up now and miss two or three weeks training you never get it back.

“We’re working them hard but not pushing them too hard, especially in this hot weather.

“I think the boys are enjoying it.

“It’s been a bit more scientific, we’re using technology that Real Madrid use, but you use your eyes as well, but it makes it easier to spot if they’re injured.”

New signing Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is in good shape according to the Spireites boss.

He said: “It’s great to see Sylvan on the training field, he’s fit in that he’s got no injuries but he’s not match fit.

“Getting him ready for Barnsley is the only thing that matters. He’s great to have here because whichever club he’s at he’ll score goals for you.”
