Dan Gardner is itching to make his first start of the season for Chesterfield after a short cameo last weekend against Notts County.

The 24-year-old was sidelined after going under the surgeon’s knife for a double hernia operation but is back and eager to impress.

Gardner is back in contention this weekend for the visit of near neighbours Sheffield United to the Proact Stadium (1pm kick off).

He said: “It’s painful watching when you want to be involved with you team-mates, you’re watching and all you want to be doing is playing.

“I’ve been flying in training - it’s good to be back. Whenever you first come back you’re always eager to impress, working hard and doing everything you can to get in to the team.

“I’ve been like a little kid in a sweet shop buzzing around, I just can’t wait to get back playing. I don’t want to push myself too far too soon but I feel great and can’t wait.

“The fans have been great ever since I’ve been here both home and away and they really do rub off on the players. It should be a full house on Saturday and we’re itching for the game.

“We always look forward to the big games and this is one of those. You can see that all the lads are ready and raring to go for Saturday, there’s a good vibe around the place.”
