Chesterfield supporters have been buoyed by the news that popular utility man Drew Talbot has signed on for another season.

The utility player turned down better offers elsewhere to enable him to add to his 210 Spireites league appearances after it looked certain he’d move on.

Fans will be hoping new manager Dean Saunders will be able to pull another rabbit out of the hat by persuading Jimmy Ryan to accept his deal,

But that looks an altogether tougher task as the former Scunthorpe midfielder has had an offer on the table since January that’s so far failed to get pen and paper to come together.

With other clubs seeking major pickings such as Gary Roberts and Sam Clucas, Saunders is limited in the recruitment he can instigate until any outgoings are known, though two strikers are his minimum incoming requirement, with seemingly-Bradford-bound Jon Stead near the top of his wanted list.

Saunders has indicated he wants a targetman plus an instinctive, nippy type, the two job descriptions sought by just about every manager in the competition.

The boss is expected to unveil Brian Carey as his assistant this week.

The Irishman has been coaching at Blackburn Rovers.
