Spireites are expected to delve into the transfer market today, with former Owls winger Etienne Esajas one of the likely signatories.
The unattached Dutchman, 27, played the full 90 minutes in Tuesday’s reserves win at Oldham and, though he’s not yet fully match fit, he’s expected to sign and he could be involved in Saturday’s home game against Torquay United at the Proact Stadium.
There’s also a clear need for reinforcements in an attacking role and the loan market is expected to be plundered to give support to Jack Lester and Craig Westcarr, especially with fellow front man Scott Boden carrying a groin injury, albeit a minor one.
Teenager Jacob Hazel was the lone striker in the reserves game, indicating Tommy Wright’s lack of numbers in that vital position.
Midfielder Danny Whitaker played an hour at Oldham and is likely to feature from the start on Saturday after shaking off a groin injury.
He’s featured on the left of midfield this season but his preferred position is just off one or two strikers and it’s in that position that he’s likely to feature in at the weekend.
Chesterfield have a more than decent historic record over Torquay, though last season the Gulls won in an FA Cup match in North Derbyshire.
In league games, United have won just one in the last ten meetings and they’ve yet to return to the South West with maximum points since their first trip to Saltergate back in 1960.
