Chesterfield hope to appoint Brian Carey and Mal Purchase as assistant manager and fitness coach respecively this week.

The appointment of the duo, who worked with Spireites boss Dean Saunders at Wrexham, Doncaster and Wolves, has been delayed due to previous contractual issues.

Last week, academy manager Gerry Carr left the club by mutual consent.

Chief executive Chris Turner said: “I would like to thank Gerry for his efforts over the last two years and wish him all the best for the future.”

Carr added: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my two years as Chesterfield’s academy manager and feel the club will see the benefits of the work I have done in the forthcoming seasons. I feel it is now the right time to pursue other opportunities in the game and I wish Chesterfield good luck for the future.”

Two scholars, Laurence Maguire and Jake Beesley, were signed on as professionals at the end of the season, though both were at the club prior to Carr’s involvement.

Ex-Sheffield Wednesday defender Mark Smith remains in charge of U18 team affairs. One man who came through Chesterfield’s ranks, Tendayi Darikwa, is believed to be high on Leeds United’s radar with a fee of £800,000 mentioned.
