Even before any significant attacking signings this summer, the bookies have backed Chesterfield to comfortably finish in mid-table.

Whilst, not surprisingly, Spireites close rivals Sheffield United, Doncaster and Barnsley are all tipped to finish in at least the play-offs, Paul Cook’s side can be found in the 20-1 to 25-1 zone for the title.

After the disappointment of relegation immediately after winning the League Two title in 2011, consolidating comfortably for a season wouldn’t be too disappointing, though most Chesterfield followers feel that the current squad, plus a tried and tested striker and a couple more decent additions could be peppering the top ten.

Promoted Rochdale along with Colchester United, Crewe Alexandra and Gillingham are most odds-makers’ choices for the drop with Port Vale and Notts County looking over their shoulders.

Cook is desperate to sign an experienced striker with Michael Higdon, formerly of Crewe and currently with Nijmegen in Holland his preferred choice. But at this moment there’s too big a gap between player and selling club’s demands and buying club’s offer and that gap needs to considerably narrow before any meaningful talks can be held.
