Blues show their class with 4-1 victory

Chesterfield 4, Wycombe Wanderers 1

Swashbuckling Chesterfield re-established a nine-point lead at the top of League Two thanks to a comprehensive victory over second-placed Wycombe.

A major factor in the thrilling display was the return of skilful wide player Dean Morgan, sidelined since New Year’s Day, who injected an additional level of quality into John Sheridan’s team.

The Spireites dominated from start to finish and Deane Smalley gave them a 27th minute lead when he flicked home a Danny Whitaker free-kick.

Whitaker made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when he netted from the penalty spot after Jack Lester had been felled by Alan Bennett in the area.

Lester extended Chesterfield’s lead to 3-0 just 35 second into the second-half before Wycombe Jon Paul Pittman volleyed home from close range following a rare attack in the 81st minute.

Blues leading marksman Craig Davies, with his 18th of the season, made it 4-1 with three minutes remaining.
