(Midland Youth Cup final)

Dave Bentley has given a pat on the back to the youth set-up at Chesterfield FC after the teenage Spireites battled for Midland Cup glory for the second year on the trot.

Team manger Bentley was disappointed that his lads collected runners-up medals again but said reaching the final reflected well on the youth set-up at the B2net.

He said: “It is a great achievement for the club to reach the final for two years running.

“And it speaks well of everyone involved with the Centre of Excellence, not just us in charge of the youth team.

“A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes and people deserve praise for this.’’

Last year, the lads narrowly lost out 3-2 against Rushden and Diamonds while Lincoln were the opponents this time around

Under the B2net floodlights, there were early chances for Jacob Hazel and Blues No 9 Bradley Bowland before Lincoln took the lead.

A Tim Whitaker back pass left Sam West exposed and Imps Connor Robinson went past the Chesterfield keeper and passed for Jordan Thomas to find the net.

The Spireites battled to get on terms but it was the visitors who extended their lead through Carl Cunningham and at the half-time break, Lincoln had a 2-0 lead.

Persistent rain made the playing surface slippy in the second-half and it worked to City’s advantage when a cross from Archie Massen was deflected off Will Dennis into the net for goal number three.

Bentley said: “We gave a decent account of ourselves but one or two of the lads froze.

“We had a couple of early chances and could easily have been 2-0 up.

“But it did not happen and when Lincoln went ahead it gave them confidence to retain the ball a bit longer.

“There were a number of first-year players involved and they will learn from the experience.’’
