The centre-half, playing in the final game of his loan spell from parent club Burnley, took a blow to the head and fell awkwardly.

He was knocked out in the incident and was given medical treatment on the pitch, before being stretchered off and taken to hospital at half-time.

But the club’s Rodger Wylde, head of sports science and medicine, has allayed fears of lasting damage.

He said: ““Tom’s injury was observed at hospital and he also had an X-ray on his neck to ensure everything was okay.

“He was soon released and is no longer in any danger. We will continue to observe Tom and ensure his progress is as it should be - using the proper guidelines - but with the season now at an end he has the freedom to make a steady recovery.”
