A goal and an assist ensured a memorable 50th birthday for Glapwell’s Neil Grayson, as he helped his side to a 2-1 win over Welbeck Welfare.

A fifth league victory looked on the cards for Glapwell when they were rewarded for a blistering start to the game on seven minutes.

James Whitfield waltzed past a defender before cutting the ball back inside to Grayson who hit a first time effort into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Grayson turned provider a minute later as he flicked the ball into the path of Nathan Whitehead who turned and hit an effort into the top corner from 12 yards. It looked like plain sailing from there but the home side were back in it soon after when Julian Stevens’ long kick up field caused hesitation at the back and Tom Robley headed the ball over the stranded Ryan Hopkins into his own goal.

Glapwell had chances to extend their lead further but Lee Naughton, Kyle Lee, Callum Dovison, Whitehead and Whitfield all going close.

Welbeck almost snatched a point at the death but Josh Bretnall fired wide after rounding Ryan Hopkins.

And there was still time for the referee to reverse a penalty decision, which would have given Glapwell the chance to put the game to bed.
