But unbeaten Etches, who has an 83% KO record after 18 ring successes, wants to give the fans a stoppage on Kell Brook’s undercard in Sheffield on March 28. Asked if he’d tap up Rhodes for any information on Khomistsky Etches replied: “I’m going to go to do my thing and try to go one better than everyone and get him out of there. If I hit him, I am pretty sure I am taking him out.”

Khomitsky is 40 but commands Etches’ respect as a man who can put a dint in his unbeaten record if he fails to perform at his peak. “He has been in with some very good kids” said Etches. “He has knocked Jamie Moore out and unbeaten prospect Frank Buglioni, drew with Nick Blackwell, lost to Martin Murray by a point or two, but gave him a tough fight. He gave Ryan Rhodes a decent fight. He is a world level fighter, it’s a big step up for me.

“You always get people out there saying this and that, but look at Floyd Mayweather, he is old enough to be my dad, but no one can touch him, so I am definitely not taking this guy lightly. All I want to do is be a world champion and this fight, when I win, will take me one step closer to where I want to be.”

The Dronfield puncher said it was a massive bonus to be on pal Brook’s undercard.

“I am a good friend of Kell’s” he said.

“It will be a brilliant atmosphere, obviously he is world champion which is what I want to be so it’s the best bill I could be on.”

Etches tips his pal to successfully defend his world title: “Kell when he is on his game, at welterweight, I don’t think there is anyone who can test him. If his head is right he will win the fight no problem whatsoever.”
