Boxer Gavin ‘Dominator’ Down is back in action in Chesterfield on Saturday.
Down won English, Midlands Area and British Masters belts to put Bolsover on the boxing map and the all-action light middleweight continues his exciting professional career at Escapade when Steve Ward from Alfreton defends his EBF Midlands cruiserweight title.
Greg Scott-Briggs, Darrell Grafton and David McClellan all box in front of their home crowd, but many will be there to watch Down try to turn back the clock to his fighting prime when he stood toe-to-toe with top fighters and thrilled millions.
His unforgettable scrap with Bradley Pryce was screened on by BBC television and Down says the Welshman pulled out of a scheduled rematch.
Pryce went on to defend the Commonwealth light-middleweight title six times and earn a top-ten world ranking.
Down also had terrific scraps with Daniel James, Alan Bosworth and perhaps best of all was his three-round win over Black Country scrapper Steve Saville in April, 2001, that ringside experts said provided as much excitement as the Marvin Halger v Thomas Hagler slugging match for the world middleweight title.
Promoter John Ashton reports tickets for the show are selling well and hopes to stage several more shows in Chesterfield this year.
Tickets for the show are available from 07758 404858.
