Cyril Leason, who has organised the Historic Hardwick Hall Road Race since the 1980s, has been honoured for his dedication and hard work.

Cyril, 72, collected a Derbyshire County Council-backed Excellence in the Community Award at the Devonshire Dome, Buxton, on Monday.

Around 500 people attended the event and Cyril, from Pilsley, was delighted with the presentation.

He said: “I received a standing ovation as I returned to my seat and some people asked me for my autograph.’’

A noted athlete in his younger days, Cyril took part in many races from 100 yards to three miles before he moved into long-distance running. He has completed seven marathons.

Cyril is planning the 30th running of the Hardwick race to coincide with the 2012 London Olympics.
