New Mills 2, Matlock Town 1
(After extra time)
Matlock were made to pay for their generosity in front of goal as New Mills came from a goal down to equalise ten minutes from the end of the 90 minutes and then snatch an extra time victory in this Derbyshire Senior Cup third round clash.
After a lively start from both sides, it was the Gladiators who gained control to largely dominate the opening half as they kicked up the pronounced Church Lane slope.
Matlock at last went in front on the stroke of half time.
Coates pulled off a tremendous save as Holmes met Tyeisse Nightingale’s low pull back, but Nightingale was alert to scramble in the loose ball at the second attempt for his fourth goal in the last three games.
That should have been the catalyst for the Gladiators to record a convincing win, but the plucky Millers rode their luck and showed tenacity to fight back.
In the 80th minute, the hosts equalised when Field struck a glorious 25-yarder which ripped past Kennedy’s left hand.
Matlock simply ran out of steam in the extra 30 minutes and two minutes before the break a Horrocks cross from the left looped goalwards and found the target off the far upright.
New Mills Grandison was red carded for a second mistimed challenge with seconds left but it made no difference as the Millers stood firm to send Matlock out.
Matlock: Kennedy, Davies, Kendall (Bowler 94), King, Yates, Lukic, Bettney (Whittington 81), Warne, Davidson (Joynes 78), Nightingale, Holmes. Sub not used: Whitfield.
