Matlock travelled to Clifton village on Saturday hoping to break their recent run of poor form. With both sides struggling, a win could secure Matlock’s league position and ensure a comfortable end to the season.
With the wicket covered until the start of the game the surface looked like it would favour bowling and so Kevin Leatherday, who again won the toss, put the hosts in to bat.
This looked to be a good decision as Chris Pemberton (2-53) and Ed Lander (1-40) hit good areas and built up pressure at the top of the Clifton batting order.
Openers Edward James (18) and Will Wilson (6) fell cheaply before Matt Wilson (45) and top scorer Faisal Khan (89*) stemmed the tide. Alex Woolliscroft (48) also contributed a valuable innings at the end.
Clifton posted 233-6 from their 50 overs and got off to the best possible start with openers Ashley Draynor (0) and Leatherday (2) leaving Matlock 14-2.
Rob Lowe (19), Harvey Hosein (40) and a constructive 75 not out from Edward Lowe helped the reply to 162-5 as Matlock collected seven points in a losing draw.
Matlock miss out next week as other teams catch up on their game in hand.
