Club stalwart Paul Goodwin also took three wickets as Chesterfield defeated Marehay by four wickets after successfully chasing down the visitors’ total of 208 on an untypical Queen’s Park pitch.

The visitors were asked to bat first and the highlight of the their innings was an opening stand of 65 between Ross Perry-Taylor (31) and Lewis Palmer (28) and a good knock of 56 (three sixes and three fours) by Stephen Lee. The Marehay captain, James Kyte, also hit a quick 20 off 11 balls but Chesterfield produced some tight bowling which eventually dismissed their opponents out by the 48th over.

Goodwin, who has bowled well all season without luck, took a well-deserved 3-22 off seven overs as second change, and he was ably backed up by the rest of the attack, most notably Josh Savage (3-65 from 14 overs). The Chesterfield fielding was also of the highest standard, with some memorable catches and a terrific run out by Callum Hiron.

The hosts’ reply hit trouble early on and at 26-2, they badly needed the stand of 68 that developed between skipper Alex Hibbert (19) and Ross Whiteley to bring them back on track. Whiteley hit a typically fast 38 off 42 balls, including eight fours.

At 103-4, Chesterfield still had a lot to do, but a classy stand of 60 between Hosein and club coach Andrew Parkin–Coates (41, seven fours) settled the nerves, taking the score to 163. Hosein then took charge of the proceedings and saw Chesterfield home by the 47th over with 58no, which included one six and five fours.

Spectators were treated to another mature innings by Hosein and were again left wondering why he is not more established in the Derbyshire side.

Opening bowler Robert Peat bowled well for his 3-51 and Marehay, although disappointed, should take comfort from a fighting display. Their energy and commitment in the field right up to the end of the match were extremely impressive.

Chesterfield gained 22 points and Marehay seven. Chesterfield are at home again at Queen’s Park on Sunday when they take on Spondon at 12.30 pm.
