Montrose opts for Wycombe not Spireites

Chesterfield FC's pre-season build-up has been dealt a blow by Lewis Montrose who has turned his back on a move to Saltergate.

The former Wigan Athletic prospect had signed a pre-contract agreement with the Spireites but has now decided instead to join Wycombe Wanderers who gained automatic promotion to League One last season.

Montrose's snub has now left new Chesterfield manager John Sheridan with the task of finding another midfielder before the 2009/10 season kicks off at Torquay on Saturday, August 8.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who spent three years with the Premier League Wigan, had a very impressive spell with the Spireites towards the back end of last season after being brought in by former manager Lee Richardson.

Montrose joined on loan in February and made a big impact during his 12 games with the Blues.

His strong midfield play helped rejuvenate the team's play-off push and although a top-seven finish proved elusive, Montrose's sterling displays had been good enough to attract the offer of a two-year deal from the north Derbyshire side after he was told that he was being released by the Latics.

His contract with Wigan expires on Tuesday and it was expected that Montrose would put pen-to-paper after signalling his interest by signing the pre-contract agreement.

But Montrose's promising performances had not gone unnoticed and he had caught the eye for former England U21 manager Peter Taylor who guided Wycombe to an automatic promotion slot with Wycombe.

Sheridan has refused to be downhearted by Montrose's decision.

He said: ''Although I am disappointed with Lewis's decision I only want players who wish to play 100 per cent for Chesterfield. Clearly that is not the case here so I'm not losing any sleep over it and we quickly move on.''
