CHESTERFIELD: Spireites won’t rush back injured stars
SPIREITES host third placed Cheltenham Town this evening in their search for two home wins in four days.
A come-from-behind victory over Oxford United, with the winner coming in stoppage time, ended a run of just one point from four games at the Proact Stadium for Chesterfield, whilst a run of four straight clean sheets for the Robins was ended by Rotherham at the weekend.
Manager Paul Cook has no new injuries to contend with but he has urged caution about rushing back players who have been out for a while.
He said: “Brennan Dickenson had a bit of a knock on his foot but he will be fine. The hard part at the moment is just tinkering with the lads that have been out for a period of time.
“The natural reaction from everybody is to get everyone back in the team quickly but we must be respectful towards the injuries.
“Luis Boa Morte only trained on Friday for the first time, Marc Richards joined in on Thursday and Friday.
“We want everyone back playing but we must be patient and that’s hard work in football.
“Will two play? Probably not, will one play? Probably. Mark Randall has got stitches in a gash in his shin, he’s touch and go for the game.
“The squad’s in good order, so we need to be careful with what we risk at the moment.”
Scott Boden has been playing as a lone striker of late with crowd favourite Jack Lester on the bench.
Cook explained his rationale: “Ideally I like to play with one up front, that’s my preferred formation with a lad behind the striker, someone who can beat people, go past people.
“We’re still finding out about the squad, we’ve only been here a blink, we can’t play everyone. We’re still trying to find out about everyone so before we make a decision, positive or negative, we want to give everyone a chance. We all know what Jack can do, his record speaks for itself and is second to none, there’s not a lot I need to learn about Jack Lester, but with others I do.”
Long serving Spireite Mark Allott, aged 35, whose contract was cancelled by mutual consent last Friday, will be a guest of the club and introduced to the crowd at half-time. That will allow supporters to thank his for his service.
He stands in 12th spot in the all-time club appearance list.
