A long-range goal from Mike Jones on 70 minutes gave Oldham all three points at Boundary Park on Bank Holiday Monday, as Chesterfield sit two points above the bottom four.

Wilson said: “We didn’t think it was going to be a classic but wanted to come out of the game with something to show for it.

“For one moment of poor defending we would have done.

“We’ve had too many times when we’ve had opportunities to put a bit of quality into key areas when attacking and we didn’t do it.

“We frittered too much away and we’ve got no-one to blame but ourselves in that respect.”

He added: “I think, what was more a concern for me, was our attacking momentum.

“We didn’t have that quality that we’ve promised to have before.

“It’s a bit of composure more than anything. When everything’s going on around you, you’ve got to have that calmness about yourself.

“I’ve just said them in there they’ve got to have the fire in their bellies but ice between their ears.

“When key moments come you’ve got to appreciate it and understand it then deliver, but we didn’t do that today.”
