Wilson thrilled with win over Barnsley

Danny Wilson praised what he called a '˜solid and disciplined' performance after Chesterfield ran out 2-1 winners at Barnsley on Saturday.

Wilson’s former club were dispatched thanks to goals from Lee Novak and Ollie Banks to now be four points clear of the relegation zone.

And Wilson felt the points were deserved against a side pushing for a play-off spot and who had won the Johnston’s Paint Trophy last weekend at Wembley.

He said: “We knew we had to be solid and disciplined and that’s exactly what we were against a very good side.

“We kept them quiet for long parts of the game and restricted them to a few chances in the first-half before soaking up the inevitable late pressure.

“There were a few scrambles at the end but we did well. We had a bit of luck with the shot which hit the post and came back out but you get that luck sometimes.

“We knew we could cause them problems and came here to do just that. The winner was well deserved given we’d gone toe-to-toe with them and didn’t give them time on the ball or let key players play big roles in the game.”

Wilson had praise for striker Lee Novak who overcame a horrifying open goal miss in the first-half to put Spireites in front in the second.

He said: “These things happen to strikers once or twice in their careers - the ball came across quickly to him and it’s just hit his heel.

“Thankfully it’s not cost us and his all round display was excellent, capped off with the goal.

“He and Jay O’Shea were both excellent, as was Tommy Lee in goal, but collectively it was a superb team performance.”

Jamal Campbell-Ryce will now face a suspension having been sent off for two bookable offences, although Wilson was left bewildered by referee Neil Swarbrick’s apparent inconsistency.

He said: “About five minutes before Jamal’s first yellow, Adam Hammill kicked the ball miles in frustration at a decision and didn’t get booked. Jamal then kicked it about five yards and was yellow carded. I don’t understand it.

“Again, thankfully it hasn’t cost us any points which is probably just as well for the referee as otherwise I might have had more to say to him about it!

“The main thing is we’ve got three massive points and although things haven’t changed a huge amount in terms of the league table today, it gives us huge confidence going into the next games and I think another win will make it very difficult for those below to catch us.”
