Breckin signs for Spireites

Former Chesterfield FC defender Ian Breckin has become manager John Sheridan's first signing after he rejoined the Spireites on a two-year deal.

Breckin (33) was a popular figure at Saltergate where he made 249 appearances for the Blues between 1997 and 2002.

After joining Wigan Athletic in June 2002 he moved to Nottingham Forest for 350,000 where he made 161 appearances by the time his contract ended last month.

Ian Breckin said: "I am delighted to be returning to Chesterfield at a time of historic change for the club with the move to the new stadium. Five or six clubs showed interest in me - including Rotherham where I began my professional career - and Division One sides Oldham and Walsall.''

Manager John Sheridan said: "I am really pleased to sign a player with great experience who has a hunger to help us get out of League Two. We have done well to get him as a number of other clubs were competing for his signature."

Chesterfield's players were due to report back to Saltergate today to begin their pre-season preparations. Tomorrow will be taken up with the Chesterfield FC golf day at Grassmoor.

* Utility player Gregor Robertson, who has made 73 league appearances following a move from Rotherham two years ago, is expected to sign a one-year extension to his contract at Saltergate.
