Blues priced at 14-1 for league title

Bookmakers Totesport have handed Chesterfield FC's new manager – who is set to be named on Monday – a huge slice of pre-season motivation.

For the bookies believe that the Spireites will miss out on promotion from League Two next season for a third year running.

Totesport does not even think the Blues will qualify for the end-of-season play-offs and has marked them down to finish in eighth spot.

Should the new team chief wish to provide an additional spur when the players return to Saltergate to begin their pre-season preparations, he will need to do no more than pin the Totesport odds to the dressing room wall.

The company has given Chesterfield odds of 14-1 to clinch the League Two title, a price that sees them one place adrift of the play-offs.

Joint favourites for the championship are Rotherham United and Bradford City who are both priced at 15-2.

Play-off final losers Shrewsbury and relegated Northampton are both well-fancied at 8-1 while Crewe (11-1), who also came down from League One, Alan Knill's Bury (11-1) and Rochdale (12-1) are expected to be well placed.

Just below Chesterfield are Bournemouth (16-1) and Cheltenham (20-1).

Little is expected of derby rivals Notts County (28-1) or newly-promoted Burton (40-1), the Conference champions.

Favourites to drop back into non-league football are Macclesfield Town (50-1) and Accrington Stanley (66-1).
