Carol Wengraf has become a world champion – at the age of 73.
Carol battled her way to a top crown when the world fencing championships were held in Croatia.
The sprightly Hathersage pensioner is the reigning European over-70 women’s sabre champion and she was in great form to add the world laurels to her list of achievements.
In a group of nine, she dropped just one fight to win the gold medal ahead of team-mates Silvia Brown and Connie Adam.
Britain’s veteran fencers produced their best ever results at these championships, topping the medal table with four gold, four silver and five bronze medals. USA were second and Russia third.
