Hope Valley’s Maddie Thompson played a key role as Great Britain secured a silver medal in last week’s Women’s U25 European Championships.

Maddie was part of the squad that finished second in the inaugural, two-day tournament against Germany and the Netherlands, held at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.

On day one, Maddie and her team-mates opened the event with a narrow 62-58 defeat to the Netherlands, with the 18-year-old registering five points.

The second game of the day saw a convincing win over Germany, with Maddie again proving her worth with six points.

With the Dutch in the driving seat, GB players knew they could ill afford any slip-ups but despite a valiant effort they fell to a 70-47 defeat which ensured the gold medal for their opponents.

In the final match of the tournament, GB took on Germany in what was effectively a silver medal play-off.

Thankfully the home nation pulled through with a convincing 15-point winning cushion to seal second spot and cap a successful weekend.

She said: “Receiving a silver medal was a great achievement, improving on the team’s bronze medal at the 2011 U25 World Championships in Canada.

“Having lots of new faces added a new depth to the team and worked well with the experience that us London Paralympians brought.

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to the FSB for supporting the GB Women’s U25 Team which is such a valuable part in providing new players with the chance of gaining international experience.”

Team coach Mat Foden reflected on the weekend saying: “We’ve been able to give international experience to some of our future stars which is extremely important.”
