When it comes to pulling power, Bakewell’s young farmers are simply the best.
For the lads have hauled their way to national tug of war title.
The Bakewell competitors claimed their laurels at the Royal County of Berkshire Show at Newbury.
Representing Derbyshire and the East Midlands, they used their finely-honed strong arm tactics to defeat teams of pullers from Staffordshire, Montgomery, Essex, Sussex and Yorkshire, Devon and Northumberland.
And their prowess was illustrated by the telling statistic that throughout the competition, they dropped just one ‘end’ to Staffordshire.
The Bakewell lads lost out to Staffordshire in last year’s final and the two teams made it to the final this time around, with the Peak District pullers gaining revenge.
Team members of the Young Farmers’ Club are (back row from left): Sam Boulton 19, Charlie Village 19, John Yates 23, Edward Boam 25 and tack boy Nigel Birch.
Front: Dave Sowter 25, Alex Birch 24, coach Geoff Harrison, Eddie Carter 19 and Joe Birch 20.
The team coach, Geoff Harrison said: “They have all worked and trained really hard to reach this final competition and to come home with the trophy was a tremendous achievement for all of us.”
