Promising Chesterfield hurdler working with Jessica Ennis-Hill's trainer Toni Minichiello

Chesterfield hurdler Alicia Barrett is quietly confident heading into her maiden BUCS Nationals next week.

She heads into the event off the back of a hugely impressive performance at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Poland last year.

Barrett broke her personal best in the 100m hurdles three times over the course of the championships and missed out on the British U20 outdoor record by just 0.02 seconds as she came sixth in an incredibly exciting final.

Despite her outdoor success however, the first year history student at Sheffield Hallam University is not expecting too much of herself when she competes in the 60m indoor hurdles event at the 2017 BUCS Nationals, which will run in the Steel City between February 17 and 19.

Speaking about the competition, the 18-year-old Chesterfield Athletics Club runner said: “I feel OK about it. I never thought I was that good at indoor racing and then I surprised myself with a new personal best a couple of weeks ago. I ran 8.36s and then an 8.28s at a competition in Slovakia after doing ok at the Northern Athletics Championship earlier in January.

“So a medal at BUCS Nationals would be nice and really cool.”

Now in its fifth year, BUCS Nationals sees more than 6,000 students compete in three action-packed days of sport and is has proven to be a platform that significantly enhances the future prospects of the young athletes competing.

Barrett is one of those who will take part and hopes that the influence of coach Toni Minichiello, the man who oversaw Jessica Ennis-Hill’s illustrious career, can help her secure a place on the Great Britain team for the European Junior Athletics Indoor Championships, later this year.

“It is cool to work with Toni Minichiello. He knows a lot and he gives good advice – he makes things sound really easy even when they are difficult,” she added.

“I’m still a junior so I would like to go to the Europeans and hopefully get a medal there. I ran really close to the time the other week so I hope I can get on the team.”
