Annual Arthur Johnson tournament attracts players from across UK

The Arthur Johnson Memorial Trophy is run by Ian Johnson in honour of his late father who won national competitions for crown green bowling and was well known and respected throughout the bowling community.

Old Whittington Bowls Club hosted this year’s 17th renewal, which attracted 64 players. And the winner was Chris Mordue, of Pudsey in west Yorkshire, who beat Andrew Mailer, of Bradfield in south Yorkshire, 21-11 in the final thanks to a convincing performance.

In the semis, Mordue had shaded another Yorkshire player, Danny Sillitoe, of Maltby, 2-19, while Mailer had knocked out Andy Whittaker, of Meersbrook, Sheffield, 21-18 in another close contest.

Mordue received the trophy from Ian, who said: “We would like to say a big thankyou to Old Whittington for hosting the competition and to all those who helped to run it. All the players were very appreciative of the way the greens had been prepared.
