A FOOTBALL-MAD teen has hailed his quick-thinking best mate a hero after he potentially saved his life when he dramatically collapsed during a kick-about at their local park.
Frazer Maclean put Ross Whitehead in the recovery position and sent people to get help when Ross suddenly dropped down unconscious while playing football with friends at a park in Duckmanton last Wednesday.

Ross (15) says that the swift actions of 14-year-old Frazer and his brother Arron could have saved his life.

"The last thing I remember is leaving the house to walk down and play football, but I don't remember playing at all," said Ross, of North Crescent, Duckmanton.

"I am really thankful to them because I could have died.

"It shows what good mates I have got — they are heroes."

After Frazer gave first aid initially, he sent someone to fetch brother Arron (17), who has had more first aid training, and they phoned their mums, who rushed down to the park.

Frazer, of St Peter's Close, Duckmanton, said: "He just went down and didn't move — we panicked and didn't know what to do.

"I just wanted to help him and did the first aid I learnt at Badgers."

While an ambulance was called, Arron checked Ross was breathing, had a pulse and tried to revive him while Frazer reassured Ross's mum, Mandy Deveril.

Mandy (34) said: "It was like I wasn't there.

"I couldn't do anything — I knew it was my son but I couldn't take it in.

"I was petrified.

"Frazer put his arm around me to check I was ok — he was brilliant."

Ross was unconscious for around 30 minutes and was flown to Sheffield Children's Hospital by air ambulance, where he underwent many different tests and scans.

Doctors have still to find out exactly what caused him to fall unconscious but he was back at home the following day and says he feels fine now.

And Ross and Frazer, who are both season ticket holders at Chesterfield FC, made sure they didn't miss Saturday's match despite all the drama.

Mandy added: "I don't think I could ever say thank you enough.

"It was amazing for them to react like that — they were both fantastic."

Frazer and Arron's mum, Karen Maclean, (41) said: "I am very proud of them both.

"Frazer did a fantastic job."
