Speed fear on 'rat run'

Allowing school-run motorists to drive at 60mph along a busy single-lane 'rat run' has angered residents who believe it is an accident waiting to happen.

Derbyshire County Council has reduced the speed of Baslow's main road to 50mph but has left Over Lane, used by people travelling to the village school, at 60mph.

Residents believe the road, which narrows into a single-lane track, could become more dangerous than it was as drivers will be encouraged to drive faster once they leave the A623 in a bid to avoid traffic through Baslow.

Cllr Mike Longden said he felt the decision not to reduce the speed limit on Over Lane was "ridiculous" and added that it should be 30mph.
He said: "I will be taking it up with highways to see how we can get a sensible solution.

"This 'rat run' is used by people entering and leaving the village for the school. People use that single lane all the time and it is an accident waiting to happen.

"This was an opportunity for the county council to limit the speed of the lane completely."

Mr Longden said 22,000 vehicles go through Baslow every day.
Resident Richard Williams-Menlove believes the road speed should be cut to 20mph to be safe.

He said: "It would seem sensible, on a lane which has several blind spots, to restrict it to 20mph, especially on a stretch where there have been several accidents."

A spokesman for Derbyshire County Council said: "Over Lane is a rural road and the 60mph section has little development and a good safety record. This means a 60mph limit would normally be appropriate but if people have concerns we're always happy to listen and investigate if necessary.

"We would remind drivers that speed limits are not targets – they should always drive according to the conditions."
