COUNCIL chiefs have revealed their vision for the future for Matlock as part of a consultation with residents.
The new set of guidelines for the development of the town over the next ten to 15 years has been put together by Derbyshire Dales District Council, to replace the masterplan which was originally drawn up for the town.

Town councillors have criticised the new proposals, which they said would lower expectations for the town's future, but council chiefs have said new plans will give them more flexibility and help bring about quicker changes.

Mike Hase, district council planning policy manager, defended the new move and said the masterplan — which has so far cost the council £198,000 — would be progressed into a new document following Government advice about the feasibility of the original scheme.

He said: "This Supplementary Planning Document provides detailed guidance for any new development in Matlock town centre and will be a significant material consideration that the district council will take into account when determining planning applications."

Residents are being urged to have a say on the vision for the development of the town and there is another questionnaire with similar questions to those asked back in 2006 with the masterplan.

The areas earmarked for change are Bakewell Road, Imperial Road, Firs Parade Station Approach, Bank Road and the district council is also asking for views on Dale Road.

The planning document will be available to view until August 21 and exhibitions will be staged in Hall Leys Park, Matlock Town Hall reception and the Imperial Rooms. Information leaflets will be available at each exhibition.

WHAT IS BEING PLANNED

BAKEWELL ROAD: The creation of a high quality riverside quarter with a mix of uses including a major retail scheme and residential development. It is planned for there to be a distinctive gateway into Matlock and a pedestrian route between Bakewell Road and Imperial Road.

IMPERIAL ROAD: The creation of a civic quarter for commercial, residential, community and cultural facilities - possibly a new library. There could be a multi-purpose public square which can be used for markets and events.

FIRS PARADE/NEW STREET: The creation of a park quarter with commercial and residential development. Officers also plan to improve the pedestrian connections between Firs Parade and other areas of the town.
