Fossil studies and bridge building were just two of the themes explored by Dales pupils during National Science and Engineering Week.
Young scientists at Wirksworth Federation of Infant Schools looked at rocks, stones, soil and bones and took part in a range of activities including digging, rock carving, burying a time capsule, looking at fossils, producing art work with crystals and visiting Wirksworth Stone Centre.
Headteacher Jo Poyser, said: "The children had a fantastic time taking part in science investigations and the staff were amazed at the treasures the children had found at home to include in our collector's corner."
Youngsters at Bakewell Methodist Junior School learnt about the mechanics of bridge building and had visits from an ecologist, a steam engine enthusiast and engineers.
Acting headteacher Sally Dixey, said "Hopefully some of our children have been inspired to become the next generation of bridge builders, ecologists, engineers and scientists."
