Officers stopped a Volkswagen Polo in Curbar at 3am on March 6 and smelled alcohol on driver Sarah Campbell's breath.

She failed a roadside breath test and was arrested and went on to give a reading of 82mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath - more than double the 35mcgs limit.

Helen Griffiths, prosecuting, told Chesterfield magistrates there had been nothing wrong with Campbell's driving and she was fully co-operative with police.

Campbell (38) of Arran Cottage, The Bank, Stoney Middleton, admitted drink-driving. She had no previous convictions.

The justices fined her £161, with £85 costs, and imposed a 17-month road ban that will be cut by a quarter if she passes a drink-driving rehabilitation course.

"There had been quite a lot of trouble. A man had been making malicious reports about her to various agencies because she had broken off their relationship," said Julian Hammond, for Campbell.

"On this evening she received a phone call saying he was going to commit suicide. She went to his address and he started an argument.

"She left and then he made a report to police that she had been drinking and driving. It's all the result of someone being spiteful."

Mr Hammond said Campbell might have to quit her job as a waitress in Castleton because it would be difficult to get there by public transport.
