THIS week’s Looking Back photograph features staff from Hillhead Quarry standing in front of two steam lorries.
It was discovered by Maureen Howes, from Northumberland, during a loft clearance.
Her late husband, Terry, was a draughtsman in the 1960s and 1970s for The Hughes Bros Hillhead Quarries, before being appointed Quarry Manager at Hillhead Quarry, which was later taken over by Tarmac.
“He later joined the Civil Service Quarry Inspectorate and served for many years in the Southern District, rising to the rank of HM Senior Inspector,” Maureen explained.
“Three years before his retirement we were relocated to the North East and lived in Morpeth in Northumberland.”
She added: “I thought your readers would enjoy seeing the photograph and maybe be able to name the people and put a date to it.”
