THE reason so many taxis are in Chesterfield (‘Taxing issue’, Times Talk, July 28) is solely the responsibility of Chesterfield Borough Council.
East Midlands Trains Limited ceased issuing permits to additional taxis four years ago.
And because Chesterfield Borough Council recklessly continued issuing new plates in a town centre which has only 19 Hackney-rank s-paces for 180 cabs which resulted in double parking in the town, additional taxis wanted permits for the rail. As a result East Midlands Trains had no option but to limit.
As for the statement they make thousands, permits work out at 56p a day. hardly a fortune.
