INTERESTING article on dialects (Times Notebook, March 17).

It reminded me of when I moved to Derbyshire in 1962 from Wakefield and my dad used to tell me and my new friends that we should be outside laking cricket if we were bored.

The word laking had not been heard before by my friends and met with some confusion.

You’re right about teacakes pronounced tearcakes.
