LETTER: Devolution could see us living in one area but controlled by another

Only this weekend I have heard about Chesterfield borough councillors' vote this Thursday whether or not to link up with Sheffield council, doing away with our link to Derbyshire County Council.

What on earth is our council thinking? Chesterfield is in Derbyshire. What a plan, live in Derbyshire and be controlled by Sheffield.

I have tried to read this plan on the Derbyshire County Council website and the more I read the angrier I have become.

What right have our elected councillors got to do such a thing to the people of Chesterfield without any consultation?

They may or may not vote for it to go ahead this Thursday.

But the fact that they vote this Thursday and it’s not general knowledge to everyone in the borough this plan looks very much done and dusted.

We have our borough councillors and I believe seven of them are county councillors as well.

Will the grass be greener for them in Sheffield as reading the plan they can no longer be county councillors in Matlock. Have a look on the county website who they are and what they do.

I should not think out loud such a personal thought, but the fact they have got to this stage without, I believe, informing the people in the borough is terrible in my view.

Whilst writing I have found out the vote is more complicated than I first believed. It’s gone over my head — far too much information to read over a weekend.

The vote is between a merger with Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire or the Sheffield City Region. Discussions have been taking place for ages with both.

They have come to the end of their discussions with both and are now voting this Thursday. What happened to the people in the borough? What a decision to be made by so few for the thousands that live in the borough.

We who will be effected by whatever is decided should have had a say.

I do hope, fingers and toes crossed, they choose the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire path.
