We will not raze pool to the ground

Could I counter rumours that have been circulating in Eckington that the council is planning to demolish and replace the swimming pool with housing.

This is not true. The council has not discussed, nor has any plans to close the pool.

To the contrary, we are investing in improvements to our leisure facilities around the district and we are encouraging more local people to get active as part of our ‘Just Do More!’ and Olympics campaigns.

We think these false rumours may have been fuelled by our recent consultation into the district’s new Local Plan. When finalised this plan will guide the future development of land throughout North East Derbyshire – however, the recent consultation did not refer to any existing or future plans to demolish and replace the swimming pool.

We are an ambitious authority and are working hard to regenerate our towns and villages so they remain great places to live work and visit.

In Eckington, we have worked with the community to produce a Development Framework for the town and are also progressing an ambitious scheme to build new high quality council homes on Pitt Street and Pipeyard Lane – again, these schemes will not impact on the swimming pool.

If people have any questions or concerns we would urge them to get in touch with us, and I would appeal to people not to speculate as this is both unsettling for our customers and causes unnecessary worry for the pool staff.

In summary, can I again reinforce that there are absolutely no plans to close Eckington Swimming Pool and I would urge people to come along to the facility and ‘Just Do More!’.

To find out more about activities at the pool visit www.ne-derbyshire.gov.uk/just-do-more or ask a member of the team.

Cllr Graham Baxter, MBE

Leader, North East Derbyshire District Council
