Woman breaks back in Peak District fall

A woman fractured her spine after being swept away in a Peak District stream and dragged through a culvert.

She was among a group of walkers from the city on the Peak District moors, off Snake Pass, when she was swept away in a stream with two other walkers.

They were carried through a culvert under the A57 before being spat out.

Members of Edale Mountain Rescue Service and paramedics were alerted to the incident and found a woman in her 50s with head, chest and back injuries, including a fractured spine.

She was also suffering from hypothermia.

The other two escaped without serious injuries, but were all taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, in Fir Vale, by ambulance.

Earlier in the week, rescue team volunteers helped a climber who suffered an open leg fracture in a fall at Stanage Edge.
