WI: Pilsley WI to send donation to Leukamia Research in memory of Gill Speed

Have your say

At the August meeting of Pilsley WI, the president, Lynda Hall, welcomed members, and extended a warm welcome to new member Mrs Jackie Drinkwater, and also to Mrs June Shaw, who returned after a lengthy absence due to illness.

It was with sadness that the president announced the death of former DFWI chairman Mrs Gill Speed. It was agreed that a donation be made to Leukaemia research in her memory.

Congratulations were extended to Pauline Wright who had won two prizes at Bakewell Show – a first prize for a carrot cake and second prize for a beaded Christmas stocking which was on show at the meeting.

Jill Tunnicliffe had held a successful garden party and made a donation to the WI branch. Thanks were extended.

Ann Smart completed arrangements for the visit to Hasland Theatre in September. A report was given on the Tea on the Farm afternoon by Edna Sherriff. Sheila Rayson gave information on a photographic exhibition at Hardwick Park between September 3 and 8.

Mrs Wendy North was the speaker/demonstrator for the evening. She showed members how to make cup cakes using a flannel, a flower, Sellotape and pretty paper. Her demonstration was interspersed with an interesting talk. The vote of thanks was given by Sue Curley.

Raffle prizes were won by Jackie Drinkwater, Sheila Rayson, Jill Tunnicliffe, Mary Wray, Margaret Bingham and Christine Foster.

Refreshments were served by Jill Tunnicliffe, Janet Swain and Hazel Spencer.
