A community-minded couple are planning to breath new life into a north Derbyshire village.
Adrian and Gina Clarke hope to set up a new community shop in Barlow in a bid to boost the village which has lost a number of businesses over the years.
Mr Clarke, 68, of Springfield Road, in the village, said: “Quite frankly, there’s nothing here.
“When I came to Barlow in the late-1970s there were many businesses including shops, pubs, garages and a local post office but it’s really changed.”
The couple are in the process of putting together a planning application and applying for lottery cash to fund the store – which will be run by volunteers.
It is hoped the community shop will open in the village next year.
Mr Clarke said: “We think the store would be a huge asset to villagers.”
He added he was keen to hear residents’ thoughts about the ambitious project at meetings which will take place on the second Tuesday of each month at the Trout Inn at 7.30pm.
