Drivers were stuck in heavy traffic on the motorway between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire after a crane caught on fire this morning (January 7).

Two lanes had to be closed on the southbound carriageway of the M1 between Tibshelf Services and J28 for Alfreton when the fire broke out in the roadworks area around 7.30am.

The fire and rescue service and police were called to deal with the incident, as well as Highways England.

This caused a build-up of traffic on the surrounding roads, including the A61 and the A38.

A highways England spokesman said an extra 17 minutes was added on to the journey time between J28 and J29.

The services managed to reopen the middle lane around 9.30am, which eased the traffic.
