Runners went bananas at the weekend to raise awareness for Fairtrade Fortnight.

A relay took place between the five Fairtrade towns in the Derbyshire DalesMatlock, Wirksworth, Darley Dale, Bakewell and Ashbourne – as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs until March 9, with runners carrying a giant inflatable banana to raise awareness.

Grayden Daniels, of the Matlock Fairtrade Group, said: “It went really well, we were really pleased at how many people turned up.”

Barbara Daniels, of the group, is visiting various primary schools around the Dales teaching youngsters about Fairtrade and helping them cook up treats using Faritrade ingredients such as sugar, jam, vanilla, cocoa and bananas.

She was able to do this with a donations of £45 worth of ingredients from Sainsbury’s in Matlock.
