A CONCERNED trust has taken over and re-opened a troubled community centre which had been forced to close down.
Hillstown Miners Welfare Trust stepped in to rescue the Hillstown Community Centre, on Nesbit Street, after Scarcliffe Parish Council decided it could no longer manage the property.
Trust secretary Tina Wilkinson said: “We wanted to keep the facility open for community groups who were struggling to find a new location. The parish council couldn’t afford to keep it on and because the property didn’t belong to anyone it came back to the trust under the terms of the lease.”
Group representatives attended a meeting at the centre this month to offer support and outline what they would like done.
The trust, which owns the site where the centre is based, explained the centre had been run by an association before the council took it on and shut it in February.
