Drivers face weeks of gridlock in Chesterfield as a new cycle path is built.
Traffic delays caused by the project on the A61 near the Tesco roundabout are currently blighting the town morning, noon and night.
Highways chiefs have apologised for the chaos and said they are trying to keep disruption to a minimum.
Work on the 670-metre lane is expected to finish by the end of November.
Fed up motorist Paul Webber, 68, of Chesterfield, said: “I’m not happy at all. Why wasn’t all this done during the six-week school holidays holidays when it was so much quieter? It’s chaos out there.”
Alastair Meikle, secretary of the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign, said the work would be worth it in the end.
He said: “All this construction is gradually building a network of linked bike routes in the town enabling walking and cycling on traffic-free or quiet roads to promote sustainable and healthy travel options. One of the main reasons given for not cycling more is fear of traffic. By building the route there will be a viable alternative to using a car for many people.”
A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said: “We apologise for any delays caused as part of our work on the A61.
“We began this work as soon as designs were completed and we’re trying to keep disruption to a minimum.
“A lane has had to be coned off to keep our workers safe.
“We’re hoping to be able to remove the cones in a month’s time so traffic can flow normally again.”
Despite the mayhem, the county council’s roadworks website states that delays are “unlikely” during the construction of the path.
The £308,000 path is being installed as part of the Chesterfield Cycle Network which is a long-term project aimed at linking shopping areas, hospitals, schools, the train and bus station, Market Square and main residential areas in the town.
Cllr Dean Collins, the county council’s deputy cabinet member for jobs, economy and transport, said: “We’re committed to reducing Derbyshire’s carbon footprint and cycling is a great way to help us achieve this. We hope that people will enjoy using the path once it is opened.”
