A popular hotel on the outskirts of Sheffield has been saved from potential demolition due to changes to the HS2 line.

The Sitwell Arms in Renishaw was on the proposed route to Meadowhall, along with a number of homes in Killamarsh and Renishaw.

HS2 officials have confirmed the hotel is no longer on the intended route after the Meadowhall station was scrapped in favour of running trains to Sheffield city centre.

Peter Howarth, from the Killamarsh and Renishaw HS2 Action Group, said he understands the revised route will now miss out the majority of their area.

But the new route through North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire is now on course to demolish houses on the newly-built Shimmer Estate in Mexborough.

Residents living there have received letters stating their properties are earmarked for demolition.

Strata Homes, the company which is still in the process of building the estate, has said it is ‘shocked’ by the news.

Mr Howarth said his group would be willing to support other local residents now facing uncertainty following his organisation’s three-year battle.

“I have been banging on for over three years to Government about using the main Sheffield station because it makes economic sense,” he said.

“They are pretty much doing what we have been banging on about for three years.

“It is good news for us but we are still not out of the woods because it is not absolutely finalised.”

He said he would be willing to offer his help to others now affected by the revised plans.
