Derbyshire’s schoolchildren might be gearing up for the summer break, but for these pupils of yesteryear, class has long been dismissed.

Marilyn Wheelhouse née Green, of Old Whittington, sent in a snap from 1960, of classmates at Brampton Board Infants School.

She said: “Do any Derbyshire Times readers remember any pupils on this photo? I am on the back row, fourth from the left.”

In another photo, sent in by reader Peter Bown from the 1950s, smartly-dressed William Rhodes pupils pose for the camera with headteacher, Mr Stevens.

Peter, 70, said: “I am fourth from the left on the second row down. John Webber is the tall lad in the middle on the back row. His dad was Billy Webber, who was a hairdresser in Chesterfield.”

Pat Lowe née Martin is appealing for help identifying the pupils on a photo from 1960, of the Year 1 class at Newbold Green School.

But summer came early for Edward Burton and his friend (right), as seen in this picture from June 1953.

Edward’s brother Graham, who submitted the photo, said: “The raft was borrowed from Markhams Works, tarred underneath for waterproofing by lads from Piccadilly Road. The picture was taken on the River Rother near the road. That raft was used by so many children.”

We are always looking for more photos from bygone days for inclusion as part of Times Retro.
